The Remuh Synagogue (also Remu Synagogue written; Polish: Synagoga Remu ) is a synagogue in the district Kazimierz in Krakow . It was first built in 1553 and is named after Rabbi Moses Isserles , whose Hebrew acronym is "Remu". Today it is one of two synagogues used there.

history

In 1495 the Jewish population was resettled from Kraków to Kazimierz. In 1553 the Remuh Synagogue was built by Israel ben Josef, the father of Moses Isserles, on the edge of a newly founded Jewish cemetery (today the Old Cemetery ) on its own property. The first building was destroyed in a fire in April 1557. After that, a new building was built on the same site according to the plans of the Polish architect Stanisław Baranek .

This building was constructed in the late Renaissance style but underwent a number of changes during the 17th and 18th centuries. The building got its current appearance during the restoration of 1829. In 1933, some technical improvements were introduced during the restoration under the direction of Herman Gutman .

During the German occupation, the synagogue was confiscated and looted by the main trust agency in the east . The Bima was also stolen. The building was not destroyed. After that, the building was used as a warehouse for fire extinguishing equipment.

In 1957 the Remuh Synagogue was completely restored and the interior was restored due to the efforts of the Jewish community .
