The East Wuerttemberg Chamber of Commerce and Industry (IHK Ostwuerttemberg) has the legal mandate, as a regional self-governing body of the economy, to represent the overall interests of currently around 32,000 member companies from industry, trade and services in the Heidenheim district and in the Ostalb district. It also performs sovereign tasks for the state. It is based in Heidenheim an der Brenz .

history

Ferdinand Steinbeis , the president of the “Centralstelle für Gewerbe und Handel” of the royal government in Württemberg, founded the Heidenheim Chamber of Commerce and Industry on January 18, 1867 . Twelve members elected in the constituent meeting were to stand by the government of the country in economic questions and organize self-government of the economy, as representatives of the trade, the factory owners and the trades in equal parts. The first president of the chamber was Kommerzienrat Louis Lang from Heidenheim, owner of the cotton weaving mill CF Ploucquet and the second chairman of the manufacturer Carl Zoeppritz, owner of the wool blanket company Zoeppritz in Mergelstetten.

From 1899, due to the separation of the craft, the name “Chamber of Commerce Heidenheim” applied to the chamber . In 1934 the independent Heidenheim Chamber was dissolved during the great economic crisis of the 1930s and assigned to the Ulm Chamber. The reconstruction of the "Heidenheim Chamber of Commerce and Industry" , which consisted of the Aalen and Heidenheim districts, was largely supported by well-known company owners in the region.

The chambers of industry and commerce in Germany have functioned as corporations under public law since the Chamber Act, which came into force on December 18, 1956 . The costs of the establishment and activities are covered by contributions from members of the Chamber (Act on the Provisional Regulation of the Law of Chambers of Commerce and Industry, Section 2, Paragraph 1, Section 3, Paragraph 2.).

Since the district expansion on January 1, 1973, the "IHK Ostwürttemberg" has included the district of Heidenheim and the Ostalb district and currently has more than 32,000 member companies.
