Itō Sōhaku

Itō Sōhaku ( Japanese 伊藤 草 白 ; born February 24, 1896 in Kyoto ; died December 9, 1945 ) was a Japanese painter of the Nihonga direction during the Taishō and Shōwa periods .

life and work

Itō Sōhaku attended the business school "Kyōto shiritsu daiichi shōgyō gakkō" ( 京都 市立 第一 商業 学校 ), but left it without an exam and began to devote himself to painting. At the 1st exhibition of the artists' association "Kokuga sōsaku kyōkai" in 1918 he was able to exhibit his picture "Insel" ( , Shima ), on the 2nd the picture "Kitagishima" ( 北 木 島 ), on the 3rd the picture " Landscape ”( 風景 , Fūkei ), for which he received the prestigious Chogyū Prize. At the 4th exhibition in 1924 he showed the pictures “Landscape of Noto ” ( 能 登 風景 ) and “ Biwa ” ( 桃 杷 , Biwa ). The following year he showed the picture “Landscape” ( 風景 , Fūkei ), which was awarded a silver medal, at the exhibition organized by the Osaka Mainichi newspaper ( 大阪 毎 日 新聞 ) .

Further participation in the exhibitions of the "Kokuga sōsaku kyōkai" followed. He showed the picture “Kurobe Gorge” ( 黒 部 溪谷 , Kurobe keikoku ) at the 5th exhibition and “Garden” ( , Niwa ) on the 6th . On the 7th he showed no picture. In 1924 Itō became a candidate for membership ( 会 友 , Kaiyū ), two years later he was elected a member. When the artists' association was dissolved in 1928, he participated in the founding of "Shinjusha" ( 新 樹 社 ). At their 1st exhibition he showed the picture "Coastline" ( 海 辺 , Umibe ). With the dissolution of Shinjusha after its 2nd exhibition, some pictures are dated to the mid-thirties, from the years after that no pictures of Itō are known.
