The Italian Embassy in Washington DC is Italy's diplomatic mission to the United States . It is located northwest of downtown Washington, DC on Massachusetts Avenue and Whitehaven Street, which branches off from there.

history

With the establishment of diplomatic missions in the United States, the Kingdom of the Two Sicilies began as the first Italian state in 1826 , followed by the Kingdom of Sardinia-Piedmont in 1832 . Since the Kingdom of Italy emerged from the latter in the Risorgimento in 1861 , today's Italian embassy also emerged from its diplomatic representation.

In 1870, the Italian Mission was on 2017 G Street. During the tenure of Ambassador Saverio de Fava, which lasted from 1881 to 1901, the embassy changed its seat eight times, and again five times in the following 24 years. In 1925, the embassy moved to a new, relatively small, neo-renaissance building designed by architects Warren and Wetmore on 16th and Fuller Streets. In the course of time, various organizational units had to be outsourced to other locations. Construction of the new, much larger office building on Massachusetts Avenue began in 1996 and the move took place in 2000.

In 1976 Villa Firenze , a country house in Rock Creek Park that Colonel Arthur O'Brien had built between 1925 and 1927, was purchased as the ambassador's residence . In 1942 Colonel Robert Guggenheim acquired the property, partly converted it in the Italian country house style and named it after his mother Florence Villa Firenze . The villa with its nine hectare park at 2800 Albemarle Street and 4400 Broad Branch Road in Forest Hills ( ) is still the residence of the Italian ambassador, who also uses it for official receptions.
