Italian fever

The Italian fever was one that occurred in the Middle Ages disease whose causative agent is not identified today. The epidemics occurred in 876 and 877, 888 and 927. The disease was so named because it was believed that the troops of Karlmann brought the disease with them from Italy. It was rampant on the Rhine . Symptoms included eye pain and constant coughing. Many soldiers in the imperial army died with constant coughing. The plague is mentioned in the annals of Fulda .
