Johann Martin Roth (born April 16, 1858 in Philippsburg , † February 17, 1937 in Durlach ) was a German teacher , beekeeper and the founder of Germany's first state beekeeping school in Eberbach .

Life

Johann Martin Roth aspired to a teaching position and was admitted to the teachers' seminar in 1873. After three years of training, the young teacher became involved in beekeeping, actively taking up beekeeping and joining the Baden State Beekeeping Association . He combined his practical work with specialist reading on the keeping and lifestyle of bees. "The bee newspaper became my body journal, Huber's textbook a gospel," he wrote in his memoirs. As early as 1881 Roth published his first article in the bee newspaper and took part in the general assembly of the Baden beekeeping association, which had 1,700 members at the time. His motto was: “You have to know how bees live, what is beneficial to them and what harms them.” He suggested the establishment of the Würmtal beekeeping association and took over the chairmanship there. In 1887 he was appointed hiking instructor by the Baden Regional Association.

At the end of the 1880s, Roth developed the plan to build a beekeeping school. While the regional association rejected the project, it found support from the Grand Ducal Ministry of the Interior in Karlsruhe. At a traveling meeting of German-speaking beekeepers in Regensburg, he promoted his concept of state-supported beekeeping schools. When he was transferred to the primary school in Eberbach, he founded and directed the first state-recognized beekeeping school in Germany, which enjoyed grand-ducal support as a pilot project. Grand Duchess Luise attended the beekeeping school in her first year and advocated the participation of women. Roth's activities made Eberbach the center of beekeeping in Baden until the school was closed again in 1898.

In 1894 Roth published his "Handbook for the Badische Beekeeping School", in which he summarized the achievements of the 19th century in the beekeeping sector . Many areas of his book are still valid today. For 38 years, Roth was editor of The Bee and its Breeding. Illustrated monthly journal of the Baden State Association for Beekeeping. In 1895 he published the first year of the “Baden Beekeeping Calendar”, which was not replaced until 1935 by “The Beekeeper's Yearbook”.

The multitude of his activities in addition to a full deputate as a teacher led to breakdowns due to overwork and finally to his early retirement in 1907. Nevertheless, from 1910 on, he ran the regional association's office for five years. He died on February 27, 1936 in Durlach .

Services

Roth sat on the board of the state association for the unification of the quarreled beekeepers in Baden. He worked on improving honey sales and combating foulbrood. Some of the things that today's beekeepers take for granted, such as beekeeping insurance, uniform labeling with a seal to identify local honey, standard jars and statistical surveys of the individual associations are among his most important merits.

Honors

Roth was awarded the Royal Order (IV class) .
