Iwanaga-hime ( Japaneseイ ワ ナ ガ ヒ メ ( Kojiki : 石 長 比 売, Nihonshoki, Sendaikujihonki: 磐 長 姫)) is a female kami in Shinto mythology . She is the daughter of Ōyamatsumi and the older sister of Konohanasakuyahime . Her name means "The Timeless Rock". The name part “Iwa” means “rock” and “Naga” is “timeless”.

In the myths she is considered a female kami who has eternal youth and long life. The most common names of Iwanaga-hime are Iwanagahimenomikoto and Konohanachiruhime .

The description of the myth

Iwanaga-hime married Ninigi along with her little sister Konohanasakuyahime .

Ninigi, however, rejected Iwanaga-hime because of their ugliness, for which Ōyamatsumi cursed him and his descendants (the Tennō ) with mortality.

The Nihonshoki say that Konohanasakuyahime conceive a child and Iwanaga-hime cursed them.

In addition, the Kojiki says that Konohanachiruhime is another name of Iwanaga-hime, and she married Yashimajinunokami, the son of Susanoo .

The overview

After Iwanaga-hime was rejected by Ninigi, she saw her horrible face in a mirror and she threw away her mirror. The mirror jumped up to a village and lit it up forever.

Cult and adoration

The shrines where only Iwanaga-hime is worshiped are the Kumomisengen Shrine (Matsuzaki, Kamo, Shizuoka Prefecture), the Oomuroyamasengen Shrine (Ōmuro Mountain, Itou, Shizuoka Prefecture), and the Izu Shrine (Gifu, Gifu Prefecture) ).

Ōmuroyaha is an incarnation of Iwanaga-hime and Konohanayakuyahime is commonly referred to as the kami of Mount Fuji .

There is a popular belief in the Izu area that if you climb Mount Ōmuro and praise Mount Fuji, you will get injured or make a bad catch in fish.

Iwanaga-hime is worshiped together with Konohanasakuyahime in the Sazareishi Shrine (Mikumo, Itoshima, Fukuoka Prefecture). Sazarreishi means "little stone".

There is “Sazareishi no Iwao to narite” in the Japanese national anthem, which means that Sazareishi became a rock, or “Iwao” in Japanese, a long time ago. Iwanaga-hime is thus related to the Japanese national anthem.

Iwanaga-hime is also worshiped as a kami of marriage in the Kifune Shrine (Sakyou, Nara Prefecture).

After Iwanaga-hime was rejected, she felt ashamed of her living conditions and decided to enter into many relationships.
