The University of Iwate ( Japanese 岩手 大学 , Iwate daigaku , abbreviated: Gandai ( 岩 大 )) is a state university in Japan . The campus is located in Morioka in Iwate Prefecture .
history
The university was founded in 1949 through the merger of the four state universities of applied sciences. The four were
- the Morioka School of Agriculture and Forestry ( 盛 岡 農林 専 門 学校 , Morioka nōrin semmon gakkō , founded in 1902),
- the normal school Iwate ( 岩手 師範学校 , Iwate shihan gakkō , founded 1876),
- the normal youth school Iwate ( 岩手 青年 師範学校 , Iwate his shihan gakkō , in Kanegasaki , founded in 1921), and
- the Morioka Technical Center ( 盛 岡 工業 専 門 学校 , Morioka kōgyō semmon gakkō , founded in 1939).
The university inherited today's campus from the agricultural and forestry college and the technical center. The Agriculture and Forestry School was founded in 1902 as the Morioka High School of Agriculture and Forestry ( 盛 岡 高等 農林 学校 , Morioka kōtō nōrin gakkō ) to research and teach agriculture in the cooler region of Japan. Its former main building (built in 1912) is still on campus today as a history museum for agricultural education ( 農業 教育 資料 館 ). The school was renamed the Morioka Agricultural and Forestry School in 1944.
At first the university had the faculties of agricultural science, engineering and liberal arts . In 1965 the Faculty of Liberal Arts moved to what is now the campus and was renamed the Faculty of Education in 1966. In 1977 the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences was re-established.
