Izena-jima ( Japanese 伊 是 名 島 ) is an island of the Okinawa Islands of the Ryūkyū Islands .
geography
Izena-jima has an area of 14.12 km² and is surrounded by a coral reef. The island of Yanaha-jima is 1.2 km south and the island of Urugami-jima is 500 m east. Until the 80s or 90s, the island of Yanoshita-jima was 300 m west, which was then connected to Izena-jima through reclamation and became a peninsula. Between Iheya-jima and Izena-jima is also 2.2 km north of Gushikawa-shima.
All of these islands, except Iheya-jima, belong administratively to the municipality of Izena , with Izena-jima being the only inhabited one. As of January 1, 2015, there were 1535 inhabitants in 771 households on the island. The main economic sectors of the municipality are agriculture , especially sugar cane and rice, and fishing .
