Jólnir
Jólnir was an island that emerged from volcanic activity in 1966 and has since sunk again. Jólnir is located south of Iceland and is an eruption vent of the Surtsey volcano . Other islands with the same characteristics are Syrtlingur and Surtla.
The name is derived from Norse mythology and is another name for the god Odin .
The creation of Jólnir is closely linked to that of the neighboring island of Surtsey , which was created in 1963. Volcanic activity took place in the region and some small islands were formed. In 1966 Jólnir rose to 70 meters above sea level. Nevertheless, the island eroded again after the end of volcanic activity on August 8, 1966 and sank again below sea level in October 1966.
