Jón Helgason (writer, 1899)
Jón Helgason (born June 30, 1899 on the farm Rauðsgil in Reykholtsdalur / Hálsasveit ; † January 19, 1986 in Copenhagen ) was professor of Icelandic philology in Copenhagen and also an Icelandic poet.
After graduating from high school, he studied in Copenhagen , especially Nordic philology; Master's degree in 1923, in 1925 he received his doctorate (Dr. phil.) At the University of Iceland with a study on Jón Ólafsson frá Grunnavík, published in Copenhagen in 1926.
From 1927 to 1971 he was the director of the important collection of the Árni Magnússon Foundation , which makes its medieval Icelandic documents accessible.
He regularly published his own poems. His first anthology was published in 1939 under the title Úr landsuðri and immediately became very popular. Even today it is represented in many school books and anthologies and is read with great pleasure.
Parts of the Reykjadalsá river and the Rauðsgil gorge next to the farm of the same name are now under nature protection.
