Jörg Feustel-Büechl (born September 6, 1940 in Regensburg ) is a German space official. From 1994 to 2005 he was Director of Human Spaceflight for the European Space Agency ESA .

Life

In 1967 Feustel-Büechl completed his mechanical engineering studies at the TH Munich. He began his career at MAN Turbo as an aerospace engineer, where he mainly dealt with the development of launch vehicles. He rose to the position of area director with responsibility for the development activities of MAN - Neue Technologie.

On November 1, 1986, he was appointed Director of Space Transportation Systems at ESA . His area of ​​responsibility included the development of the Ariane program and the Hermes space glider. In 1994 he was appointed director of human spaceflight and microgravity. His responsibility was the development of the ESA part of the International Space Station ISS . From 2005 to 2007 Feustel-Büechl acted as director for reforms.

Jörg Feustel-Büechl was the long-serving director of ESA .

From 2007 to 2014 he was a member of the Senate Commission of the Helmholtz Association of German Research Centers .
