Jewish community of Wittersdorf
The Jewish community in Wittersdorf , a French commune in the Haut-Rhin department in the Alsace region , was established in the course of the 18th century.
history
The Jewish community was first recorded in writing in 1804. She owned a synagogue and a religious school. In 1844, when the rabbinate districts were created, the Jewish community of Wittersdorf joined the Altkirch rabbinate .
Of the approximately 800 inhabitants of the community in 1845, 76 were of Jewish faith. In the second half of the 19th century their number declined due to emigration to the neighboring cities, so that the Jewish community was dissolved around 1869.
synagogue
The synagogue, built around 1822 (64, Rue Jean-Jacques Henner), was sold in 1869 and then converted into a residential building that has been preserved to this day.
