The Jewish cemetery in Miskolc , a large city in the Miskolc suburb in Borsod-Abaúj-Zemplén County in northeastern Hungary , is well preserved. Sometimes it is well cared for, and sometimes the gravestones are overgrown.
The 6.5 hectare cemetery, which is still in use today, was laid out in 1792 on Mount Avas. An estimated 16,000 tombstones date from the 18th and 19th centuries. About 14,000 Jews lived in Miskolc in the 1940s.
