Jürgen Hoffmann (lighting designer)

Jürgen Hoffmann (born in Berlin ) is a lighting designer who headed the lighting department at the Zurich Opera House from 1992 to 2012 .

After training as an electrical engineer , Hoffmann first came to the Deutsche Oper Berlin , then to the Stadttheater St. Gallen and finally in 1971 to the Zurich Opera House . There he was appointed head of the lighting department in 1992 and was responsible for the lighting design for six to eight new productions and up to 23 revivals each year. Long-term collaboration connects him with the directors Sven-Eric Bechtolf and Claus Guth , who also signed him to the Salzburg Festival and the Theater an der Wien , as well as with the set designers Rolf Glittenberg and Christian Schmidt . In 2002, Klaus Michael Grüber engaged him for his Don Giovanni production at the Ruhr Festival in Recklinghausen. In Vienna in 2009 he took on the lighting design for Guth's scenic version of Messiah at the Theater an der Wien. In Salzburg he illuminated Bechtolf's productions of Ariadne auf Naxos (2012) and Così fan tutte (2013), as well as Harry Kupfer's Rosenkavalier production in 2014 . He has also worked with the Vienna State Opera for many years .
