Jürgen Rullkötter (* 1948 in Oldenburg ) is a German geochemist and former director at the Institute for Chemistry and Biology of the Sea (ICBM) at the Carl von Ossietzky University of Oldenburg .

Career

Rullkötter studied chemistry in Braunschweig and received his doctorate in 1974 from the University of Cologne . From 1975 to 1991 he was a research assistant at the Institute for Petroleum and Organic Geochemistry at the Research Center Jülich. In 1986 he completed his habilitation at the University of Cologne with work on molecular fossils in deep-sea sediments. In 1991 Jürgen Rullkötter was appointed to the Chair of Organic Geochemistry at the ICBM.

research

At the University of Oldenburg, Rullkötter is one of the initiators of the "Research Group Biogeochemistry of the Watts", which was set up on the decision of the German Research Foundation . The group, of which Rullkötter is also the spokesperson, wants to gain a basic understanding of important processes that take place in a watt with their investigations. I.a. biological and chemical reactions are to be examined and a mathematical ecosystem model developed.

In addition, Jürgen Rullkötter is involved in the German-Israeli-Palestinian research project “Purification of polluted seawater by cyanobacteria” . Jürgen Rullkötter is also a member of the "GoMRI Gulf of Mexico Research Initiative", which studies the effects of oil spills in the aftermath of the Deepwater Horizon oil drilling platform disaster .

North German Science Prize

In 2012, the DFG research group under its spokesman Jürgen Rullkötter was awarded the North German Science Prize. The award recognizes excellent North German collaborations in marine research.
