Jürgen Sielemann (* 1944 ) is a German archivist and historian .

Career

Sielemann worked from 1969 to 2007 as an official at the Hamburg State Archives . The main area of ​​his activity was archival maintenance and information activities in the field of personal history with the focus on responsibility for the archives and the history of Hamburg's Jewish communities. For this, Sielemann also learned Hebrew.

Sielemann published his research results in numerous publications. In 1993 he initiated and edited the memorial book "Hamburg Jewish Victims of National Socialism" published in 1995 with the names and dates of 8,877 victims of persecution. In 2005 his book “'But are all calmed down.' Letters from Regina van Son to her family 1941-1942 ”. After his retirement, Sielemann's book “Sources for Jewish Family History Research” was published in the Hamburg State Archives. A guide for the search for clues ”(Volume 23 of the publications from the State Archives of the Free and Hanseatic City of Hamburg).

Sielemann's participation in the international seminars for Jewish genealogy encouraged him in 1995 to initiate the foundation of the non-profit Hamburg Society for Jewish Genealogy eV. This society is still the only German association to belong to the umbrella organization International Association of Jewish Genealogical Societies. In the quarterly magazine “Maajan - Die Quelle” the Hamburg Society published articles on Jewish family research from 1995 to 2015 together with the Swiss Association for Jewish Genealogy. Since 2016 the magazine “Liskor - Erinnern” has been published as a quarterly magazine of the Hamburg Society for Jewish Genealogy without Swiss participation.
