Jüri Mõis

Jüri Mõis (born October 25, 1956 in Pärnu ) is an Estonian entrepreneur and politician.

Life, economy and politics

Jüri Mõis attended school in his hometown of Pärnu until 1974. He graduated from the Tallinn Polytechnic Institute (now Tallinn University of Technology ) with a degree in economics in 1980 . From 1980 to 1983 he worked as a scientist at the Economic Institute of the Academy of Sciences of the Estonian SSR . From 1984 to 1991 he worked in a leading position in the Soviet-Estonian transport sector.

1991, the year of regaining Estonian independence, founded Mõis together with the Estonian Hannes Tamjärv , Rain Lõhmus and Heldur Meerits the Hansapank as a spin Tartu Kommertspank . It officially started its own financial activities on January 10, 1992. The Hansapank grew rapidly into one of the largest banks in the Baltic approach, with branches in Russia . From 1991 to 1998, Jüri Mõis was General Director of Hansapank and Chairman of the Supervisory Board. Mõis also founded wind farms . He made a name for himself especially as a proponent of extensive privatization of public services.

In addition to his entrepreneurial activity, Jüri Mõis moved into politics at the end of the 1990s. He joined the conservative Fatherland Union (Erakond Isamaaliit) around Mart Laar . From March to November 1999, Jüri Mõis was Estonian Minister of the Interior in Prime Minister Laar's cabinet . He then held the post of mayor of the Estonian capital Tallinn from November 1999 to June 2001 .

In 2003, Jüri Mõis resigned from the Patriotic Union. In 2017 he ran unsuccessfully in the Estonian local elections.

Private life

Jüri Mõis is married to Kerttu Olmann-Mõis (* 1973) for the second time. He has two children.
