Jānis Šilfs

Jānis Šilfs (born September 20, 1881 in Riga ; † June 11, 1921 ) was a Latvian communist and revolutionary .

Šilfs was born in Riga and joined the Latvian Social Democratic Labor Party after the revolution in 1905 . For the communists he worked as a propagandist and typographer. In 1919, Šilfs became the government secretary of the Latvian Soviet Socialist Republic . After they were expelled from Riga, he stayed in the city as editor of the banned party newspaper Cīņa . In May 1921 he was caught by the authorities and sentenced to death by a court martial.
