Viśistacāritra

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Viśistacāritra ( Japanese 上行 , Jōgyō , dt. Excellent practice ) is a Bodhisattva . He is mentioned in the 15th chapter of the Lotus Sutra called Welling (by multitudes of bodhisattvas) out of the earth , along with the bodhisattvas Anantacāritra ( Unlimited Practice ), Viśuddhacāritra ( Pure Practice ) and Supratisthitacaritra ( Practice of Peaceful Stance ).

Viśistacāritra is considered to be the leader of these four bodhisattvas, also known as the "four great originally transformed bodhisattvas". The qualities of the Bodhisattva Viśistacāritra have been described by scholars like T'ien-t'ai in terms of the virtue of the selfless ego already described in Brahmanism .

For some schools of Nichiren Buddhism , Nichiren is considered to be the embodiment of Jōgyō (Viśistacāritra) and thus has a special position there.
