J. Robert Oppenheimer Memorial Prize

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The J. Robert Oppenheimer Memorial Prize is a prize for theoretical physics that was awarded annually from 1969 to 1984 by the University of Florida (Center of Theoretical Physics, CTP) in Miami and is named after J. Robert Oppenheimer (who was responsible for the founding of the CTP was involved). It was endowed with $ 1,000 and a gold medal.

The first prize winner was Paul Dirac , who published the speech given in 1971 as The Development of Quantum Theory as a book (and was already teaching at Florida State University in Tallahassee, Florida ).

The prize was mainly awarded for theoretical physics, but the original award also mentioned mathematics, chemistry, biology and the philosophy of science. The prize was sponsored for several years by the theoretical chemist Alfred Sklar and his wife Olga. The initiative for the award came from Behram Kurşunoğlu .
