Jaber al Mahjoub ( Arabic جابر محجوب, DMG Ǧābir Maḥǧūb ; * January 5, 1938 in M'saken ) is a Tunisian-French painter and artist.

Life

Jaber al Mahjoub was born in M'saken, Tunisia , in 1938. He was raised by his sister as his parents died early. In Tunisia, the orphan worked as a shepherd and baker's apprentice before moving to France at the age of 18. There he worked as a baker in Marseille and Paris , before finally becoming an actor, singer and artist after a brief interlude as a boxer. His first wife, a wealthy American, became aware of his artistic work during a stay in Paris and took him to America, where she married him. However, the marriage did not last and divorced two years later.

In 1971 he received first prize at Plainfield's Annual Festival of Art. With his colorful and abstract figures he met the spirit of the flower power movement and was able to exhibit in a renowned gallery in San Francisco in the 1970s . In 1976 he left the United States to return to Paris in 1977 after a brief world tour through Canada, Morocco, Egypt and Saudi Arabia. Since then he has lived there in simple circumstances and continues to work as an artist.

Artistic creation

Al Mahjoub's pictures are characterized by their richness of color and can be recognized by the figures outlined in black. The artist likes to enrich his pictures with words and dates that give the picture further context. His imagery is shaped by his oriental origins and distinguishes his outsider art. A recurring feature of his pictures are anthropomorphic animals, especially fish, as well as events and scenes from his own past. His art is influenced by the abstract expressionism of the 1950s.

In addition to his painting, Jaber creates sculptures from all sorts of materials such as clay and paper mache. He uses skills from his time as a baker, for example by first shaping his clay sculptures in a rudimentary manner, then baking and decorating them with colors.
