Atarrabi & Mikelats is a fantasy film directed by Eugène Green .

action

Atarrabi and Mikelatz are brothers who were born a few minutes apart. Her mother is the powerful goddess Mari, her father a mortal. She had entrusted both sons to the devil for their upbringing. While Mikelatz has decided to stay with his master, the good and curious Atarrabi flees to explore the world beyond those known to them.

Mythological

The Basque goddess Mari , also known as the "Anboto Lady", is said to have lived in the Mount Anboto in Bizkaia

Mari , the highest Basque deity in pre-Christian Basque mythology , had two sons: the evil Mikelatz and the benevolent Atarrabi, who are always at odds and thus represent an early Christian representation of good and evil. The worldview of Basque mythology has references to the cult of the sun and is considered difficult to access, since the myths were displaced from religion to folk tales by the Inquisition in the late Middle Ages.

production

The French theater and film director, writer and essayist Eugène Green directed . He designed the film as a modern fable, on the border between spirituality and satire.

The siblings Saia and Lukas Hiriart can be seen in the title roles of Atarrabi and Mikelatz. Thierry Biscary plays the devil to whom her mother entrusted her two sons.

Atarrabi & Mikelats will be shown at the New York Film Festival in late September and early October 2020 .
