history

Leinenkugel Brewery in Chippewa Falls

In 1845 the German Jacob Leinenkugel, then still a child, emigrated with his family from Meckenheim in the Rhineland to the USA . His father was already a beer brewer in Meckenheim.

In 1867 Jacob Leinenkugel founded his own brewery in Chippewa Falls, Wisconsin . The region's soil was ideal for growing hops and grain, and the numerous woodworkers were grateful buyers. At first, Jacob Leinenkugel and his business partner John Miller were the only employees: Leinenkugel brewed the beer, Miller delivered it. In 1884 Miller sold his company shares to Leinenkugel. With the help of his wife Josephine and her family, the brewery grew. In 1890 a new, four-story brewery was built. A cold store, a three-story malt house, a bottling plant, a cooperage and warehouses followed.

After the company's founder died in 1899, his son-in-law Henry Casper took over management. Jacob Leinenkugel's son Matthias followed him as president in 1907. In 1927 Jacob Leinenkugel's daughter Susan Leinenkugel Mayer took over the management.

The Prohibition 1919-1933 bridged Leinenkugel with the production of non-alcoholic beer-like beverages ( "Leino") and soda water. At the end of the prohibition era, Leinenkugel was the largest producer of soda water in the region.

After prohibition, beer production was resumed. Initially, Katherine and Ruth Leinenkugel ran the company, followed by Jacob Leinenkugel's grandsons William Casper as sales manager and Raymond Mayer as president. Brewery tours were held for the first time under her leadership. Her successors, great-grandchildren Bill Leinenkugel and Paul Mayer, expanded sales to Michigan, Minnesota and Chicago. In the 1970s, competition became tougher, especially as large breweries began advertising more on television and expanded their sales across the United States, thereby competing with small and regional breweries. The majority of the breweries went bankrupt during this period.

In 1988 the Leinenkugel brewery was sold to the Miller Brewing Company , Milwaukee. Although the brewery is owned by MillerCoors, management remains in the hands of the Leinenkugel family. In 2014, Dick Leinenkugel took over the management board from his father Jake Leinenkugel and continues the company in the 6th generation.

Leinenkugel 10th Street Brewery

In 1995 the 10th Street Brewery in Milwaukee was taken over by G. Heileman Brewing . The brewery was founded in 1986 by G. Heilemann. The smaller brewery in Milwaukee produces between around 35,000 hl and 40,000 hl annually. At the beginning of 2017, MillerCoors announced plans to expand the brewery in Milwaukee. In February 2017, Milwaukee had 15 employees.
