Jacob Mertens
Jacob Mertens (Polish Jakub Mertens ; † 1609 in Cracow , Kingdom of Poland ) was a Flemish painter in Cracow.
Live and act
He was possibly Jaques Mertens , who was a pupil of Huybrecht Bruggeman in Antwerp in 1577 .
Jacob Mertens was first mentioned in 1589 as a member of the painters' guild in Krakow. In 1593 he received the citizenship of the city and married Barbara during this time. A will from 1598 has been preserved. 1601 Jacob Mertens was head of the painters' guild. In 1606 he was in prison. The last mention has been made of March 25, 1609. He died on June 26th.
Jacob Mertens had a large workshop in Krakow with several students, some from the Netherlands. Only the altarpiece of the Annunciation ( Zwiastowanie ) in the Church of St. Mary is definitely associated with his name, other works can be assumed and attributed.
