Jadwiga Łuszczewska , pseudonym: Deotyma (* 1. July 1834 in Warsaw ; † 23. September 1908 ibid) was a Polish writer and poet of romance .

origin

Deotyma is the daughter of the State Councilor, Chamberlain and Imperial Russian Chamberlain Waclaw Josef Łuszczewski (1806–1867) and the granddaughter of the Polish Minister Jan Paweł Łuszczewski (1764–1812). Via his grandmother Constance Jauch and her descendants, she is a second cousin of the Polish writer, author of Quo Vadis and Nobel Prize winner for literature Henryk Sienkiewicz (1848-1916) and a distant niece of the Polish freedom fighter Joachim Lelewel (1786-1861). Her mother was Magdalena gen. Nina Łuszczewska nee. Żółtowska (1806–1869), who had an important literary salon . Her grandfather was Brigadier General Edward Józef Żółtowski (1775-1841), who fought in the Polish Army Corps under Józef Antoni Poniatowski on the side of Napoleon and was among other things a participant in the Battle of the Beresina and the Battle of Leipzig .

Act

In the tradition of her parents' home, Deotyma maintained an important literary salon and, in addition to her literary work, was known as an impromptu poet.

Her best-known work is the novel “The Girl at the Window”, filmed in 1964 under the direction of Kaniewski and premiered in 1968 as an opera by Paciorkiewicz.
