It is one of around 330 memorials for gymnastics father Jahn in Germany.

Description and location

The Cologne Jahndenkmal consists of a 15 meter high reinforced concrete pillar . This is crowned by four cross-shaped "F" in a stylized form, the gymnast's cross . The four "F" from which the cross is formed stand for the motto of the German gymnastics association "Fresh, Fromm, Fröhlich, Frei". The monument was designed by the architect and Cologne city planning director at the time, Adolf Abel . Abel recorded among other things for the eponymous Abelbauten of brick in front of the RheinEnergie stadium , the Rhein halls and Messeturm the Cologne trade fair and the main building of the University of Cologne responsible.

The monument is located on a hill on the south side of the Jahnwiese, which, like the Adenauerhügel to the southeast, was created from the excavation for the Adenauerweiher in between . The hill was originally an earth wall intended as a spectator stand, to which a wide staircase leads up and from which the Jahnwiesen could be well overlooked. At first the monument was visible from afar, which is now preventing tall trees.

Later, a plaque was attached to the pillar commemorating the 1928 Gymnastics Festival and the 1949 German Gymnastics Championships in Cologne. In 2011, this plaque was on display as part of the exhibition In Motion - 200 Years of Gymnastics in the German Sports & Olympics Museum in Cologne. Then a member of the German Gymnastics Federation restored the memorial plaque, which was re-attached to the column in March 2012 in a “solemn ceremony”.
