Geology: Cave in the porphyry rock formed by weathering and seepage water

The Jahnhöhle is located in the Klaus Mountains in the north of the city of Halle (Saale) in the Trotha district , right on the banks of the Saale . Their formation can be traced back to weathering processes and seepage water effects along rock fissures in the porphyry here .

The cave is named after Friedrich Ludwig Jahn , the later gymnastics father Jahn . During his student days in Halle (1796–1800), Jahn hid from other students (probably from student associations) here for several days. In the cave, Jahn wrote one of his first writings, "On the promotion of patriotism in the Prussian empire". After the Prussian defeat in the battle of Jena and Auerstedt , Jahn was among Halle's defenders. The fact that he then hid in the cave from the French troops is a legend and has not been confirmed.

The cave is smaller today than it was then, as part of it was destroyed when the Saale was widened. Stone stairs lead down to the cave. It begins on the hiking trail halfway between the Klaus Mountains and the steep banks of the Saale. In 1878 a memorial plaque with the portrait of Jahn was placed above the cave. She also wears the four Turner-F, which stand for “ fresh, pious, happy, free ”, the early motto of German gymnasts.

The bronze plaque is listed as a minor monument under registration number 094 97035 in the monument register of the city of Halle .
