The Jakar-Dzong , also Jakar-Yugyal-Dzong , is the Dzong of the Bumthang district in central Bhutan . It is located on a ridge above the district capital Jakar in the Chamkhar valley of Bumthang.

At the location of the dzong there was previously a temple that was founded by the Drukpa lama Ngagi Wangchuk (1517–1554), the great-grandfather of the Shabdrung , when he came to Bhutan. The name Jakar is derived from the word bjakhab , which means 'white bird' and refers to the founding myth of Jakar, according to which a resting white bird indicated the suitable and auspicious location for a monastery to be founded. The monastery was completed in 1549 and was named Monastery of the White Bird .

In 1646 the convent order of the was Ngawang Namgyal of Minjur TENPA , the Penlop of Trongsa that has been transformed into a fortress. The name of the monastery was transferred to the fortress: fortress of the white bird . During the struggle for rule over central Bhutan in the middle of the 17th century, the fortress was badly damaged and only rebuilt in 1683 by the fourth desi of Bhutan, Tenzing Rabgye . In 1897 the dzong was badly damaged in an earthquake. The later king of Bhutan Ugyen Wangchuck ordered the restoration in 1905, albeit in a smaller size.

The perimeter wall of the Jakar Dzong is more than 1500 m long. The Utse (Central Tower) is about 50 m high. Two parallel walls connected with well-fortified towers form a protected passage which, in the event of a siege, gave the residents of the dzong access to the water.

The dzong houses the district administration and since 1998 also Drukpa monks again. Only the inner courtyard is accessible for tourist visits to the fortress.
