Jakar (also Chakkar ) is a city in the center of the Himalayan kingdom of Bhutan and the capital of the Bumthang district . About 6200 people live in Jakar.

history

According to legend, Guru Rinpoche , also called Padmasambhava, the founder of Buddhism in Tibet, first came to Bhutan in AD 746. The Chakhar Lhakhang, the "Iron Palace", marks the place of his visit in today's city center. It was the seat of the Indian king Sindhu Raja, who had the palace built out of iron at that time and thus gave it his name. The inconspicuous temple was rebuilt by Dorje Lingpa in the 14th century and is mostly closed today.
