Tongsa (also Trongsa , Dzongkha ཀྲོང་ གསར་ , Wylie transcription: krong gsar ) is a small town in the center of the Himalayan Kingdom of Bhutan and with about 3500 inhabitants at an altitude of about 2800 m, the capital of the Trongsa district .
history
The strategically convenient location of Tongsa had given the valley bailiffs (penlops) tax revenue from the caravan trade between western and eastern Bhutan at an early stage. Attempts to expand their political influence to neighboring valleys led to conflicts with other regional rulers in western Bhutan.
In 1907 the Tongsa penlop Ugyen Wangchuk was able to assert himself as the sole ruler of Bhutan: He was crowned Bhutan's first king in Punakha . Since then, all of Bhutan's monarchs have held the title of Tongsa Penlops. In 2004, the Crown Prince of Bhutan, Jigme Khesar Namgyel Wangchuck , was appointed Tongsa Governor.
