The Church of Saint Jacob or Surp Hagop ( Arabic كنيسة القديس يعقوب, Armenian Սուրբ Յակոբ Եկեղեցի ) is a church of the Armenian Apostolic Church in the Syrian city of Aleppo . The Church in the Old Syrian Quarter (حي السريان القديم) opened in 1943 and expanded in 1962.

Location

The church is on Iman-Gasse ( Arabic حارة الايمان) in the Old Syrian Quarter (حي السريان القديم) in the middle section on the southwest side.

history

After the First World War and the Armenian genocide , many Armenian refugees came to Aleppo, some of them also in the Old Syrian Quarter, which is almost entirely inhabited by Christians - mostly Assyrian refugees (حي السريان القديم) settled down. When Ardavazt Surmeyan was bishop of the Beroea diocese with its Forty Martyrs Cathedral , the Armenian Apostolic Church acquired 750 square meters of land with donations from the Italian Consul General Georgio Marcopolli. The ground was blessed on June 3, 1934, but it was years before construction began. It finally began in 1940 and the church was consecrated in 1943. The patron saint was Jakob von Nisibis (today Nusaybin / Turkey , northern neighboring city of Qamishli ). In 1962 the church was enlarged and got its present form. 1988-1989 the church was completely renovated by the Armenian diocese of Beroea.

architecture

The church has had its present form since 1962 and is a simple building with a flat roof and no elements typical of other churches, such as a dome or bell tower. It is surrounded by a small courtyard on the church's own premises.
