Jakobsplan student residence in Weimar

The Jakobsplan is a student residence of the Thuringia Student Union in Weimar . Construction of the so-called "Long Jacob" began in 1970 and was completed in 1972. The opening ceremony took place on September 5, 1972. The planning and design are attributed to the architect Anita Bach (* 1927, first female architecture professor in the GDR). The Jakobsplan dormitory is located in Jakobsvorstadt, one of the oldest parts of Weimar. Three historic buildings, including the Thüringischer Hof, were demolished in order to build the dormitory.

The south wing has eleven floors, the north wing twelve. The dormitory is currently occupied by 344 students. With rents between 105 and 170 euros per room, it is also one of the cheapest options for living in Weimar.

The top floors of the building offer an impressive view of the city, including the former Gauforum , the Jakobskirche , the German National Theater and the former Buchenwald concentration camp , which gives the viewer an architectural and historical overview of the city of Weimar.

When it opened, the Jakobsplan dormitory was viewed as a milestone in social development both by the students living there and by the city.

Originally there were administration rooms and a student club on the first floor of the north wing. These rooms are now used for university sports.

As part of the overall structure in the old town, the building is on the list of historical monuments of the city of Weimar .

The building has been refurbished since 2017. The project was advertised across Europe.
