As the first professor of architecture in the GDR , she headed the chair for building extension and interior design there from 1969.

Life

Anita Bach first completed an apprenticeship as a carpenter . Since she was then not directly admitted to the desired study place in architecture, she first studied at the University of Greifswald , where she took subjects such as art studies and mathematics. After a year, she succeeded in switching to another university and degree program at the University of Architecture and Fine Arts in Weimar (from 1951 University of Architecture), where she entered the third semester of architecture.

In 1952 she completed her diploma with honors, among other things as the best student and was then selected for the aspirantur . But then she decided on a so-called “unscheduled” traineeship and applied directly to the rector of the HAB, Otto Englberger, as an assistant . She then worked as an assistant and doctoral student in the collective of the Chair for Residential and Social Buildings and participated in a large number of competitions and research projects. In 1965 she was the first woman to receive her habilitation in the architecture department in the GDR. She wrote her habilitation thesis on student dormitories. In 1969, Anita Bach was appointed professor for the building extension and interior design department to succeed Horst Michel . From 1967 to 1972 she headed the project planning office of the Ministry of Higher and Technical Schools at the HAB Weimar. Drafts were made to expand the university in the inner city area of Weimar. Anita Bach was Vice-Rector of the HAB for five years from 1980. Guest lectureships have taken her to the University of Oxford , Ulan Bator and Havana, among others . There she received an honorary professorship in 1986 .

After completing her university career, Anita Bach founded the Bach + Bach office in Prerow in 1992 with her husband Joachim Bach, professor of urban planning at the Bauhaus University . They have four children together.

Works

In addition to her teaching and research activities as a professor, Anita Bach was able to implement some of her designs as a collective manager. Here is a selection:

Cafeteria at the park

The cafeteria for the Bauhaus University was completed in 1982. It is located right next to the main building on Marienstraße in Weimar and therefore in close proximity to the lecture halls of the university. The building was created in the course of considerations for the inner-city university expansion. The cafeteria opens onto the adjacent Ilmpark with a large glass front and offers 2500 dining places. In 1983, the Erfurt district's architecture prize was awarded for the building .

Jakobsplan student residence

The Jakobsplan student dormitory , also known as "Langer Jakob", is located on Jakobsstrasse on the corner of Friedenstrasse in Weimar and was completed in 1972. The building, which consists of two wings, has eleven and twelve floors respectively and offers 344 students living space. Today the ensemble is a listed building.

Cube house

Bach's Cube House is located at Windmühlenstraße 31a in Weimar and was completed in 1968. The four-story residential building was planned for university employees and has 16 apartments with one to four rooms and an average size of 50 m². According to the architect, the design seeks to combine stylistic elements of the Bauhaus with the prefabricated construction method typical of the GDR.

Anita Bach also worked as an employee in the Englberger collective on a number of implemented designs, for example the experimental apartment block in  Sondershausen or the campus design of the TU Bergakademie Freiberg.
