Otto Englberger

Otto Englberger (born August 17, 1905 in Erlangen , † October 1, 1977 in Weimar ) was a German architect and university professor . He was from 1954 to 1957 Rector of the University of Architecture and Construction in Weimar (HAB) and from 1953 to 1970 there Professor with the Department of living and social buildings.

Life

Englberger, the son of a beer brewer and a washerwoman, learned the profession of mason after graduating from secondary school , attended the arts and crafts school and became a journeyman in 1923 . Until 1927 he studied at the building school in Nuremberg and the Folkwang school in Essen . In 1926 he became an employee in the city building department in Ochsenfurt . From 1918 to 1926 Englberger was a member of the Socialist Workers' Youth (SAJ).

In 1926 he became an employee in the Emil Fahrenkamp office in Essen and in 1927 in the Franke office in Gelsenkirchen . From 1929 to 1937 he was an employee, most recently head of the design department of the Gagfah housing association in Essen. From 1938 to 1944 he was chief architect of their Berlin design department. In 1944/45 he was obliged to “build defensive structures” in Berlin. In 1968 he was recognized in the German Democratic Republic (GDR) as a victim of the Nazi regime .

After the end of the Second World War , Englberger became head of the building and housing department in the Blankenfelde municipal administration near Berlin. In 1945 he became a member of the Social Democratic Party of Germany (SPD). After the forced unification of the SPD and the KPD in the Soviet-occupied zone of Germany , he became a member of the Socialist Unity Party of Germany (SED) in 1946 . In the same year he joined the Free German Trade Union Federation (FDGB), the Kulturbund and the Society for German-Soviet Friendship (DSF).

1950/51 Englberger was department head at the German Building Academy then (DBA) and was appointed professor of civil appeal and social structure and Acting Director of the HAB Weimar. From 1954 to 1957 he was their first rector. From 1953 to 1970 Englberger was a professor with a chair for residential and community buildings at the HAB. In 1958 he became a member of the Scientific Council of the State Secretary for Higher and Technical Schools in the GDR. In the same year, after an incident at a carnival party , he received a party penalty for “lack of vigilance.” From 1959 to 1963, Englberger was chairman of the university union leadership, from 1962 to 1967 prorector for social sciences and from 1965 to 1969 director of the institute for residential and social buildings. In 1970 he was for health reasons emeritus .
