James the Little

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

James the Little is a man mentioned in the New Testament .

The Gospels only use his name to distinguish his mother Mary from Mary Magdalene ( Mk 15.40  EU ; Mk 16.1  EU ; Matt 27.56  EU ; Matt 28.1  EU ; Lk 24.10  EU ). At these points this Mary is also referred to as the mother of Joses (or Joseph), who would therefore be the brother of James. Only the Gospel of Mark uses the nickname “the little one” ( Mk 15.40  EU ), the parallel passages in the Gospels of Matthew and Luke speak only of “James”.

In the church tradition, James the Little was often equated with the Apostle James the Younger and with James the Lord's brother .
