Jakuchō Setouchi ( Japanese 瀬 戸 内 寂 聴 , originally Harumi Setouchi (晴美 瀬 戸 内); born May 15, 1922 in Tokushima ( Tokushima Prefecture )) is a Japanese nun of the Tendai branch of Buddhism and a writer.

life and work

Jakuchō Setouchi studied at the Tōkyō Christian Women's University . For her biographical novel about the feminist Tamura Toshiko she was awarded the " Tamura Toshiko Prize ", which was awarded for the first time in 1961 . In addition to her biographical novel on feminists, she also published semi-autobiographical novels. In 1972 she became a Buddhist nun, but continued her writing activity, now under the name Jakuchō Setouchi.

Setouchi is very productive, she has received major awards. Her most important works include the novels "At the end of summer" (夏 の 終 り, Natsu no owari; 1962) and "Kanoko, adorned with flowers" (か の 子 撩乱, Kanoko ryōran), which appeared as a series from 1962 to 1964 and then Was published as a book in 1971. It is a biographical novel about the contemporary writer Okamoto Kanoko . Her work “The Rainbow of Tomorrow” (あ し た の 虹, Ashita no niji; 2008) is counted among the “ mobile phone novels ”.
