James Cuninghame (* around 1731 , † September 10, 1788 ) was a British army officer and politician.

Life

James Cuninghame was the second son of David Cuninghame and his wife Margaret (nee Callander). He followed in his father's footsteps and embarked on a military career. Among other things, he served under James Wolfe and John Campbell, 4th Earl of Loudoun in the British colonies in North America. In 1758 he was promoted to lieutenant colonel . He returned to Great Britain around 1760 . In 1761 Cuninghame was one of the officers who brought Sophie Charlotte from Mecklenburg-Strelitz to Great Britain for her marriage to Georg III. escorted. He was later stationed in Ireland with his regiment. In 1772 he was promoted to colonel , then in 1777 to major-general . From 1780 to 1782 he was governor of Barbados. After his return to Great Britain, Cuninghame, promoted to lieutenant-general in 1782 , settled in London . From March 3, 1786 until his death he represented the constituency of East Grinstead in the House of Commons . He died unmarried and childless on September 10, 1788. His older brother Robert took over his vacant seat in the House of Commons .
