James Randolph Lindesay-Bethune, 16th Earl of Lindsay (born November 19, 1955 ) is a Scottish politician ( Conservative Party ), member of the House of Lords and was Parliamentary Undersecretary for Scotland from 1995 to 1997 .

He is the son of David Lindsay, 15th Earl of Lindsay and his first wife Mary Douglas-Scott-Montagu. On March 2, 1982, he married Diana Mary Chamberlayne-Macdonald. The marriage resulted in five children:

education

He attended Eton College and then studied at the University of Edinburgh and the University of California, Davis .

Nobility titles and politics

From 1985 to 1989 he held the courtesy title Viscount Garnock . When his father died in 1989, he inherited the title of Earl of Lindsay , the subordinate titles Viscount of Garnock , Lord Lindsay of The Byres , Lord Parbroath and Lord Kilbirny and Drumry , and the hereditary seat in the House of Lords associated with the titles. From 1994 to 1995 he was vice chairman of the Inter-Party Union Committee on Environment. From 1995 to 1997 he was Parliamentary Undersecretary for Scotland, responsible for agriculture, fisheries and environmental protection during that time. When the House of Lords reform came into force in 1999 , he was elected as one of the peers who were allowed to keep their seat in the House of Lords.
