James Lloyd (born July 5, 1939 in Liverpool , † March 22, 2013 in Skelmersdale ) was a British boxer .
career
At the 1960 Olympic Games in Rome , Lloyd won the bronze medal in the welterweight division . After victories over Mohamed Faragalla, Sudan (KO 2nd), Vasile Neagu, Romania (KO 2nd), and Phil Baldwin, USA (3: 2), he lost to the Italian Nino Benvenuti on points (3: 2) in the semi-finals . He also started at the European Championships in 1961 , but was eliminated here in the quarter-finals against the later silver medalist Hans-Dieter Neidel , GDR . After Lloyd had become British light middleweight champion (-71 kg) in 1962 , he decided to become a professional.
The greatest success of his subsequent four-year professional career was winning the “BBBofC South Area” championship in May 1965 by winning points over Dennis Read .
