James Marshall (composer)

James Marshall (* 1949 in Dallas ) is an American composer.

Marshall studied composition at the Meadow School of the Arts with Alvin Epstein . While serving with the US Air Force Band in Washington, he continued his composition studies with Stephen Burton at the Catholic University of America and received his master's degree in 1974. He also took lessons from George Crumb between 1971 and 1975 . 1975-76 he studied at the University of California, San Diego with Robert Erickson and attended summer courses at the Berkshire Music Center Tanglewood .

He became known as a composer in 1977 with the piece Après Moi le Sommeil for clarinet and percussion. He has worked for many years with the double bass player Bertram Turetzky , who premiered his concert for double bass and nine instruments Ciel Etoil in 1996 with the Sonar Ensemble and Harvey Sollberger . His works were u. a. played in Paris, Mexico City, Freiburg, New York, London, Dallas, Tucson and San Diego.
