Sir James Maxwell, 1st Baronet († around 1670) was a Scottish nobleman and landowner.

He was the eldest son of Sir James Maxwell of Calderwood, head of a branch line of Clan Maxwell , who resided at Calderwood Castle near East Kilbride in South Lanarkshire , from his second marriage to Isabel Hamilton, daughter of Sir Alexander Hamilton of Innerwick of Clan Hamilton . When his father died in 1622, he inherited his lands including the family seat of Calderwood Castle. On March 28, 1627 he was in the Baronetage of Nova Scotia the hereditary title of Baronet , of Calderwood in the County of Lanark, bestowed. Since he was childless at the time of the award, the title was given to him with the special addition that, in the absence of male descendants of his own, it could also be inherited by every closest male heir ( heirs male whatsoever ).

He was married twice. In his first marriage he married Jean Hamilton, daughter of Sir James Hamilton of Evandale. On her mother's side, she was a granddaughter of James Cuninghame, 7th Earl of Glencairn . The marriage remained childless. After Jean's death, he married Mary Coattes, daughter of James Coattes, in July 1637. With her he had a son and heir:
