James Moore II (* between 1676 and 1682 in Charleston , in what would later become the US state of South Carolina , † February 17, 1723 ibid) was a British colonial official and governor of the Province of South Carolina .

Life

James Moore was born to James Moore Sr. and Margaret Berringer. The father had been the English governor of South Carolina between 1700 and 1703. The year of birth is given in some sources as 1667. But that cannot be true. His father didn't come to South Carolina until 1675 and married Margaret Berringer in 1676. In 1667, the father was 17 years old and not yet in South Carolina. This means that the son cannot be born in Charleston in 1667. Since he was of legal age at the time of his father's will, he must have been born between 1676 and 1682. The younger James Moore became a successful planter. He married Elizabeth Beresford, with whom he had six children.

From 1706 to 1705 Moore was a member of the colonial parliament. He was also a member of the militia, rising over the years to lieutenant general. At the beginning of the 18th century he took part in various Indian wars. After the conversion of the Province of South Carolina into a colony directly subordinate to the king or the British government, Moore was appointed the first governor of this newly formed colony on December 21, 1719. He held this office until May 30, 1721. At the beginning of his term of office there were still unrest that emanated from the so-called proprietors , who had largely exercised power in the colony in the previous decades and were now deprived of their previous position. In the end, the proprietors had to come to terms with the new situation. After the end of his term of office Moore was again a member of the colonial parliament, where he took over the office of chairman (speaker). He was also a judge of the Admiralty and Attorney General of the Province of South Carolina. He died in Charleston on February 17, 1723.
