James Mulcro Drew
James Mulcro Drew (born February 9, 1929 - December 23, 2010 ) was an American composer and music teacher.
Drew was a student of Wallingford Riegger and Edgard Varèse . With works such as Lute in the Attic , Music for three muted Pianos and Primo Libro de Referencia Labarinto , he became known as a representative of experimental music in the 1960s. He taught at Northwestern University (1964–66), Yale University (1967) and in the 1970s at California State University and UCLA . He was also a member and co-founder of various music groups such as the Crossfire Mission Orchestra in New Haven in the 1960s, the Mysterious Traveling Cabaret , the American Music Theater , the Blast Opera Theater, as well as the Gray Wolf Project and the Greywolf Performing Arts Institute , which he has been since 1990 co- directs with Mary Gae George .
In addition to chamber music works, Drew composed orchestral music, including three symphonies, a piano, a violin and a viola concerto, stage works and ballets and a requiem. He also participated in multimedia works of art and sound installations. He is also known as a unique piano improviser.
