James Scott, Earl of Dalkeith KT ( 23 May 1674 - 14 March 1705 in London ) was a Scottish soldier.

James Scott was a son of James Scott, 1st Duke of Monmouth , 1st Duke of Buccleuch, and his wife Anne Scott, 1st Duchess of Buccleuch . As Heir Apparent carried the courtesy titles Earl of Dalkeith and Earl of Doncaster , but was still civil. When his father was ostracized and executed as the leader of the unsuccessful Monmouth Rebellion in 1685, his title of nobility and with it the title of courtesy Earl of Doncaster became extinct .

Scott fought in the Palatine War of Succession in Flanders in 1692 and became a Knight of the Thistle Order in 1704 . Since 1694 he was married to Henrietta (around 1677-1730), daughter of Laurence Hyde, 1st Earl of Rochester .

He died of a stroke at the age of 30. His mother's heir as Duke of Buccleuch was therefore his only surviving son, Francis Scott, 2nd Duke of Buccleuch .
