James Starley
James Starley (born April 21, 1830 in Albourne , West Sussex , † June 17, 1881 in Coventry , West Midlands ) was a British inventor and manufacturer.
Life
In 1861 he founded a sewing machine factory with Josiah Turner. Inspired by the Velocipede at the time , he began manufacturing bicycles in 1868. Together with William Hillman he developed and produced bicycles that were constantly improved. In 1870, the joint company Ariel brought the "Ariel" pegged bike to market.
The Rover Safety Bicycle was developed in 1885 by his nephew John Kemp Starley (rover means wanderer ). Starley & Sutton Co. was founded in Coventry to produce the Rover safety bikes . From this the Rover automobile brand, which is still known today, developed .
