Professional background

Jan Oetjen speaks at the "Online Marketing Rockstars" event in March 2018

Jan Oetjen studied business administration and economics at the University of Oldenburg and in Baltimore, USA. After completing his studies, he began his career in 1998 as a consultant and project manager in the Otto Group's e-commerce department . In 2001 he took over the Corporate and Business Development department of Travelocity Europe, a joint venture between the Otto Group and Saber. As of 2004, he was managing director of the Travelocity Group, responsible for the activities of the online travel provider lastminute.com, initially in France and then in Germany.

Oetjen has headed the portal business at 1 & 1 Mail & Media Applications SE since 2008. These include the two largest German e-mail providers WEB.DE and GMX and, since 2010, the international e-mail provider mail.com. He is also responsible for the business of the advertising marketer United Internet Media. In Germany, around 39 million users accessed the marketer's offers in January 2019.

Oetjen is a signatory of the "Charter to Strengthen Trustworthy Communication", which was presented on November 18, 2015 at the national IT summit. Together with the Federal Ministry of the Interior and the BSI, the signatories are committed to promoting the user-friendliness of encryption, technology neutrality, the transparency of the procedures used and the further development of procedures for end-to-end encryption. Under the leadership of Oetjen, WEB.DE and GMX introduced a greatly simplified implementation of Pretty Good Privacy (PGP) as a method of end-to-end encryption in August 2015 . In November 2017, the cloud storage was encrypted, also with ease of use.

In the run-up to the entry into force of the EU General Data Protection Regulation , Oetjen appeared as an expert in a public hearing in the Bundestag in February 2016 . He warned against the inflationary use of declarations of consent (opt-ins) and argued in favor of legal platform neutrality in order to compensate for the lead of US companies in big data .

Oetjen is one of the founders of the European netID Foundation, which pursues the goal of establishing an open European alternative to the US platforms with the single sign-on standard netID. He is chairman of the board of trustees.
