European netID Foundation

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The European netID Foundation is a neutral, independent, open foundation based in Montabaur . It was founded in March 2018 by Mediengruppe RTL Deutschland , ProSiebenSat.1 and United Internet as a private foundation with legal capacity under civil law. The foundation was a result of the General Data Protection Regulation that came into force in May 2018 . The foundation supports online offers from all sectors in the implementation of the new European data protection law and has created the open single sign-on system netID for this purpose. Users can transparently organize their consent to the use of offers from the netID partners. The aim is for netID to establish itself as a European login standard system and a European alternative to US providers.

Establishment of the foundation

Due to the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) and the E-Privacy Directive that came into force in May 2018 , three German media and internet companies - ProSiebenSat.1 Media SE , Mediengruppe RTL Deutschland and United Internet AG - initiated a login alliance at the beginning of 2017. The members of the alliance established a foundation in a joint contract. The aim of the foundation is to establish a cross-provider registration and login procedure on the web ( single sign-on ) and to take care of compliance and further development of the log-in system.

In March 2018, the establishment of the European netID Foundation as a neutral, independent and open foundation was announced. The single sign-on system of the netID foundation is an open system: Every online offer can use this system. The European netID Foundation positions itself as a European alternative to Google or Facebook. At the European netID Foundation , the user data is stored decentrally with the partners and it is ensured that the data management of the account providers takes place within the EU. A regular review ensures certification and continuous review of the standard.

The initiators of the foundation together reach around 50 million unique users per month and together have more than 38 million active accounts. On November 8, 2018, netID officially launched on the first websites. By the end of the year, the netID login was available on 65 websites. These include a. 50 portals from Ippen Digital such as Merkur.de and tz.de, Süddeutsche Zeitung , 1 & 1 , DPD , essen & Trinken, web.de and gmx.de , as well as the station portals from ProSiebenSat.1, the cooking portal kochbar.de, the media group RTL Germany and three online shops of the Swiss Calida Group. Further partners should be gradually integrated in 2019, including the Spiegel Media Group, G + J , and Scout24 , the e-commerce providers Otto Group , C&A , Conrad Elektronik and Douglas. The partners also include well-known media agencies and marketers such as GroupM and Ströer .

netID

With the entry into force of the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) on May 24, 2016, data protection standards were regulated across Europe. The European netID Foundation would like to organize the consent to the use of online offers ( opt-in ) transparently and in compliance with data protection regulations. Internet users can use the netID login system to use various online offers with the same login data. In the so-called Privacy Center , users manage their data, change their password or grant and revoke consent. The online offers only transfer user data between the various offers with consent. If the users allow the transfer, there is no need to re-enter the information for a new registration. In addition, users no longer have to remember so much login data, but only one login.
