Jan Snijders

Johannes "Jan" Henricus Cornelis Snijders (born September 14, 1943 in Eindhoven ) is a former Dutch judoka . He was European champion in 1962 in the weight class up to 68 kilograms.

Career

The 1.83 m tall Jan Snijders won the weight class up to 62 kilograms at the 1962 European Championships by beating Frenchman Roger Forestier in the final . In 1964 he won a bronze medal in the middleweight division at the European Amateur Championships. At the Olympic premiere of judo in Tokyo in 1964, Jan Snijders was defeated by Waza'ari in his preliminary group to the Frenchman Lionel Grossain and was eliminated.

Jan Snijders won bronze at the amateur European championships in the weight class up to 93 kilograms in 1965. In 1965, 1966, 1967 and 1969 he was Dutch champion in the weight class up to 80 kilograms, in 1968 he won the weight class up to 70 kilograms. At the European Championships in 1969 he again won bronze in the weight class up to 80 kilograms. At the Judo World Championships in 1969 , he finished fifth in the weight class up to 80 kilograms.

After his active career, Jan Snijders remained connected to his sport as a referee. He took part as a referee in seven world championships and was at the Olympic Games in 1988 and 1992 in service. Later he was responsible for refereeing in the International Judo Federation .

Jan Snijders is the twin brother of Peter Snijders .
