Jan Zrzavý
Jan Zrzavý (born November 5, 1890 in Okrouhlice near Havlíčkův Brod , Austria-Hungary , † October 12, 1977 in Prague ) was a Czech painter, graphic artist and illustrator.
Life
Zrzavý was a leading artist of the Czech visual avant-garde at the beginning of the 20th century, he studied at the Prague Art Academy and was a co-founder of the group "Sursum", member of the Association of Creative Artists Mánes , "Artist Talk" and the "Association of Czech Artists and Graphic artist Hollar ”. In the 1920s, Zrzavý made numerous trips through Europe, including a. to Italy, Belgium and France. The first stages of his artistic work were the pictures: "The valley of sadness": "Nokturno", "Still life with may flowers", "Suffering". These works characterize the beginning of the Prague Secession and at the same time symbolize the beginning of Czech Expressionism in the early days of Cubism . Zrzavý was inspired by Bohumil Kubišta , but above all by the Italian Renaissance, mainly by its outstanding artists, Raphael and Leonardo da Vinci .
After the First World War , his artistic work became formal, the harmony of his pictures degenerated into typically abstract, lyrical and soft forms: "melancholy", "girlfriend". In the second stage of the 20th century, Jan Zrzavý devoted his main focus to landscape painting: "Camaret", "San Marco in the night", "San Marco during the day", "Ostrauer Halden". In these works Zrzavý created his own painterly metamorphosis, a sense of the connection between the forces of nature, harmony and calm.
His grave is in Krucemburk , where he is also honored in a memorial hall.
